Londoner Rob put two major disappointments frimly behind him to re-establish
himself as a priceless asset for both club and country at the end of last
season. After missing out on both the Premiership title and England's European
Championship squad in 1996, Rob last season recovered his best form with
Newcastle - and reaped full reward with a string of games for Glenn Hoddle's
reshaped national side. A powerful attacking midfielder, he spent a decade
with Charlton Athletic before joining Newcastle for £700,000 early
in the 1992-93 First Division Championship season. His total of 44 appearances
last season was bettered only by centre-back Darren Peacock.
