Injury wrecked England international centre-back Steve's chances of adding
to his growing reputation last season, for he never played again after
succumbing to calf problems at the end of September. After 11 months out
of action, one-time centre-forward Steve faced the major task of forcing
his way back into both United's and England's defenses, but his return
to fitness this season has been like new signing for Kenny Dalglish. A
graduate of the Newcastle youth team, Steve is the only player at St. James'
Park today to have played in United's last spell in the top division, which
ended in 1989.
