The £4m fee paid by Kevin Keegan to Wimbledon in June 1995 made Warren
Britain's costliest defender - a long step up from the day he joined Maidstone
United from Leytonstone & Ilford for £10,000 in 1989. His obvious
talent sparked a transfer rush, and Warren joined Wimbledon for £300,000
less than a year later. His energetic, non-stop style brought him two England
B caps and three full caps - the last two of which were earned in 1995,
just after his move to Newcastle United. Last season, after starting only
five games before February, Warren, normally a right back, was successfully
drafted into a midfield anchor role: his versatility then kept him in the
side for the last 15 games.
